Day One....

So I thought about the blog a bit too long and have tried to catch up without it being so boring.  But the real party started a week ago after months of e-mailing and chatting on Facebook - I will post more e-mail as they are adorable.

However, the day, August 14th arrived.  I have to say in the days leading up to Seema's arrival, I had been so busy getting thr room just right and everything done, I had not thought about WHAT I was going to do when she got here.  It wasn't until someone asked me what was the FIRST thing I was going to do when she arrived. That pretty much threw me... well, bring her home and show her EVERYTHING.  That felt overwhelming, so I decided just to let her take the lead and tell me what she needed as she became accustom to me and a new home.

My mother, Mimi aka Marian went with me to the airport to pick up Seema.  We were both nervous and of course all you can do is wait at baggage claim and hope someone somewhere updates the flights that landed.  Yeah - not so much!  In typical Marian fashion she began asking where people came from and what flight and airline. We found some folks that said they were on the United Airline flight from Denver; Marian says she can always tell the Denver people???  I told Marian, she won't be hard to spot, she is a teen, traveling alone, short, dark-hair and my guess in traditional Pakistani attire.  Yup - I was right.

Marian yells out Seema and a shocked girl looks at her as Marian hugs her and says, I am Mimi!!!
We gather her ONE bag from the carousel that never has the flight info above it and out to the car we go.  On our way home, Mimi suggests that we drive by downtown so she can see the town.  Of course, I veto that and say let's get her home and let her rest - she has had 3 long days of YES orientation and travel.  We get home and Mimi has gifts and Seema graciously accepts and tries hard to not be exhausted.  She finally says she is ready to rest, she sees her room and takes a 3 hour nap.

Later that evening we sit on the patio and talk and have some dinner - a zucchinni tart and corn.  Alex and Joe come over to get jars for canning (lots more on Alex & Joe and canning) and then to bed to tackle Monday.

The Next Few Weeks!!

After committing to host parenting of course, in typical La fashion, I decide to make over the basement bedroom and bathrooom.  Which in reality were in need of something following a minor flood in February.  As my sister, Heather likes to say, I lined up my minions for the project.  There are boat load of people to thank for everything they did to make the room and bedroom fantastic!!!  Each friend knows what they did - but here is the AMAZING list of peeps - Angela, Michelle (even if she didn't finish her Honey- Do list while visiting), Kele, Josh, John, Alan, Hailey, Ryan, Gordon, Dan, LeAndra, Dowses, and Wayne - I am pretty certain I am missing someone.
Cute people!!

Then there was the SHOWER!! It started as a random Facebook post that I said having never been married or had kids, I should have a shower for myself to help with all the stuff I needed to fill the room and bathroom.  That pretty much went viral - Gina Larson jumped right on that and offered and next thing I knew I was registering at Target for sheets, towels, pillows, towel rods, hangers and so much more.  And I can honestly say I have hands-down the most amazing group of friends that did just what a shower is supposed to do - SHOWER you with love and gifts.  It is was an overwhelming moment for a control freak like me!  Thanks to everyone friend that was there to share.  Hugs to you.

Getting Ready...

Several months ago a friend via Facebook asked if I would consider being a Host Parent for an exchange student.  After asking a few friends and family what they thought of this idea,  I decide to go ahead and dive right in.  Although I knew it would change my life and my social life and travel world, it would be a wonderful experience and one my friends and family were willing to share and participate.

Once I said yes to the YES program (more later on YES) the process of applying began quite quickly.  I worried about being a never-married single parent and how that would roll in the middle eastern countries.

I guess writing about YES now seems important.  YES is an exchange program that was begun after 9/11 - Sen. Kennedy & Sen. Lugar were the promoters at the Federal level and the program is run by the US government and supported through the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the US Department of State.  The goal is to build bridges between the US people and people in countries with significant Muslin populations. It is designed to build tomorrows leaders in all nations.  YES stands for Youth Exchange and Study - clever don't you think.  If you really are dying to learn more, and I hope you are - go ahead and Google that.

Back to the beginning... apparently as a never-married single parent there are a couple extra hoops to host.  First, the student parents have to agree to a single parent home AND you get to have an EXTRA interview with the YES people.  Pretty much that consisted of some strange questions, that I wish I written down, but on general one was will I allow my student to have sleep overs at friends houses??? Well, yes, of course and would encourage them to have friends stay at my home.  Oh.. and emergency contacts and my brother had to say I was good too... WHEW!

After that - ta da - you have a kid!  Her name is Seema Yousaf from Pakistan, she is 15 years old.  That was in May 2011.
